Beware of the “Butter”

March 20, 2008 · 1 Comment

We went out with the family last night for dinner.  Very international affair.  Due to family origins we had the Germans, the British, and me, the lonely American at the table.  Had we mixed in my side of the family we would have a regular UN on our hands.

Anyway, I was starving and immediately took piece of bread once it had arrived.  I’m trying to be good about what I eat, but the butter had either garlic or onion in it and I just had to try it.  I smeared some of the whitish yellowish schmear on my bread and popped it into my mouth, enjoying the unusually smooth greasy texture of this onion and bacon flavored butter.  Tasty, but coated my mouth a little, not in a bad way but in an unexpected way.  My husband leaned over and asked me how I liked it.  Here is the following conversation:

Me:  Not bad.  But it’s a little different.

Husband:  It’s pure fat.

Me:  (I sigh.)  I know bread and butter will make me fat. Can’t you let me enjoy one bite of oniony butter without giving me a hard time?  Why does this taste like bacon?

Husband:  (He chuckles.)  Because it’s pure pork fat with onions in it.

Me:  You mean this isn’t butter?

Husband:  No, it isn’t butter.  It’s fat.

I’m disturbed for a few reasons.  First, I ate pure fat, a disgusting thought in itself.  Second, no one warned me, but then again I guess something like that isn’t weird here.  (Then again maybe I went for it and no one had time to warn me, or they thought I knew what it was.)  Third, I liked it.  But I couldn’t bring myself to do it again.

    ewww. LOL

A bunch of ex-pats from different places always fascinates me.. I think you never realise things about your country that separate you from other countries until you are no longer in your home country surrounded by a bunch of foreigners.

Hmm. There is probably a much simpler way of sayin that but its 630am here so forgive me!
